Ano Hana (The Flower We Saw That Day)

Boy, did I have no idea what I was getting into with this one.

A heart warming anime about friendship and love, of course it sounded harmless.

Beautiful really, I loved the more gentle approach to animation and the childlike approach to life.

The soundtrack was astounding, every single note of it drew me further into understanding of the story.

However, these are nowhere near what actually hit my heart like a knife with this incredibly short, yet incredibly touching (more like cutting to the heart) anime.

Beginning with some sort of ghost of a child, this story delves into the fantasy idea of her following her childhood friends around, waiting for a “wish” to be granted.  Of course, ten years after her death, she was surprised to find the sad truth:

Everyone changed.  People drifted apart.  After her death, people became bitter and broken.

Following this tragic discovery, the story bends with what changes her “pretense” brings about to the group.  Honestly, with every episode I found myself more drawn into their beautifully tragic situation.  Though this anime will definitely come with a certain dose of emotional pain, it really touched my heart and opened my eyes to the depths of friendships in many ways, the impact of love (as well as the absence of it) and the beauty of perseverance despite how things began.

10/10 would recommend.

Even going beyond the story, the lyrics for the ending theme are perhaps the best part of it all.

“I’ll never forget being with you at the end of summer
With our dreams of the future and big hopes
I believe that ten years later in August,
we’ll meet again
Such great memories…

We met in a sudden instant at the intersection on the way home
And you called out to me, and said “Let’s go home together”
I was so bashful that I hid my face with my bag
But I was so very, very happy

Ah, the fireworks burst in the night sky so nicely, it kinda hurts
Ah, the wind flows by with the time

We had so many happy, fun adventures
Together in our secret base

I’ll never forget being with you at the end of summer
With our dreams of the future and big hopes
I believe that ten years later in August, we’ll meet again
I knew that, until the end, you were shouting
“Thank you” from the bottom of your heart
Farewell while smiling and holding back tears is so hard
Such great memories…

Ah, summer break will end soon
Ah, I hope the sun and moon make friends

We had so many sad, lonely arguments
Together in our secret base

I knew that, until the end, you were shouting
“Thank you” from the bottom of your heart
Farewell while smiling and holding back tears is so hard
Such great memories…

Nothing can be done about your sudden transfer
I’ll write, and call
So don’t forget me
Forever, in our secret base

With you at the end of summer, we talked on and on
After the setting sun, we gazed at the stars
I’ll never forget the tear that flowed down your cheeks
I won’t forget
The way you waved to me until the very end
So let’s stay this way in our dreams, forever…

I’ll never forget being with you at the end of summer
With our dreams of the future and big hopes
I believe that ten years later in August, we’ll meet again
I knew that, until the end, you were shouting
“Thank you” from the bottom of your heart
Farewell while smiling and holding back tears is so hard
Such great memories…

Such great memories…” -Secret Base (ten years after)
